President Roosevelt said that phrase back in the 1930’s when the a big recession was happening. I just read this article on Mashable where Mark Hopkins quotes Steven Hodson saying that we still can get up, even if we don’t learn from our past mistakes in past recessions.

The truth is that economy isn’t perfect and capitalism isn’t perfect either. Capitalism is the best system we know and for sure the one we must use, but we need to tweak it on the go for it to achieve it’s main goal: Bring wellbeing to all the human beings living under that system. But there is one thing we haven’t tweaked since the first recession occured some centuries ago: To take control of our emotions.

At this times when i see Wallstreet indexes fell down every day, when i think the Dow Jones should be renamed Down Jones, when all the main markets in the world plunge i ask myself how many of those points that the Dow Jones went down are of true value and how many are generated by massive fear. Many financial advisors (and i must confess that i’ve read the books, but not payed attention to the authors names) have always recommended to control fear when things like this happen, but we fail to do it.

Daniel Goleman and the numerous books about emotional intelligence try to teach us how our emotions work and how we can control them. Right this is a skill we all need to develop before getting into feeling fear that will only make things seem worse than they truly are. The first thing we need to do is sit and relax, then put some music that makes us happy and start analyzing the situation thinking that every business that is in the stock market has people inside, and this persons are capable of generating revenues that is what ultimately affects share prices. For example, Yahoo Inc. is a great company, they managed to build a wide user base around the world and add some amazing services to their portfolio (Flickr to name one of those).

Yahoo stock went down quite a lot this week and i wonder how many people have sitted down and analyzed the capabailities of Yahoo before actually starting to sell and push the prices down. Yahoo in my POV is a very capable company, they can in fact build a big social network based on the wide range of users they have using individual services like Yahoo! Sports, Yahoo Mail, Flickr, etc. They can also stop focusing on Ad generated revenue and start to offer services that people can use and leave the ads to the ad expert Google. I don’t think Yahoo is worth the price that it has right now (Disclaimer: This is not a recommendation or expert advice it’s just my opinion and though i know about finances I’m nowhere near an expert).

On the other hand we have many start ups that are being affected by this plunge as they see capital flyaway from them and sales projections being lower than they expected. The main problem i see here is that many Web Startups are not focusing to the global markets. While the US could be on a recession countries like China, India and Peru are growing at rates of over 7% anually. These markets are also potential costumers and everybody knows that a diversified userbase will always be a coverage to the risk of a recession in one country. I liked the message posted by Jay Adelson saying they got money to expand their operations abroad and to more markets, that’s a good way to go for Digg. I think that their international expansion will make them bigger and i hope they get a version in Spanish and German wich may blow it up both in Latin America (Including all the Latin People in the US) and in the European Silicon Valley (Germany).

So, as you see by this few examples things aren’t lost yet. Comapnies have capabilities inside that will make them work and get out of the recession just fine. The people that let themselves be controlled by fear will leave a opportunity for those who think more calmly, buy stocks or purchase full businesses to make lot’s of profits in the future and to rebuild the american economy. Warren Buffet buys every time something like this happens and he has became one of the richest guys in the world just with stock trading (which mainly is taking advantage of others people fear).

So the recession is here and companies will be affected, yes. But we need to start getting out or creativity and look at ways to overcome it. See my post Start me up where i explain how Calley Nye is looking for funds for her startup in a new way. The world is filled with creative and capable minds so we should not worry about it. Just remember: DON’T LET COLLECTIVE FEAR CONTROL YOU.

After some months i finally decided to get an iPhone 3G switching from my old loyal Nextel Motorola i560. The main reason i changed it’s because my nextel was old and thint kept up to date with all the things i was doing on the internet. I just needed to be interconected.

It will be easier if you looked at it in pictures

Nextel i560

Basically the only thing this phones have in common are the i at the beggining, though one is for the iDEN technology and the other one is because it’s apple.

I’m really excited to have had the choice to choose which carrier to use. I wonder why apple didn’t do this in all the world. Here our 2 main GSM carriers got the iPhone so you can choose the one who offers the best plan and costumer services and it was a good deal. I even got the phone for less than 199 with a plan that has features that are not far from the ones offered in the US.

Features i like. If you are reading this and you are not a tech geek, hence you don’t have and advanced phone then let me tell you that you’re missing one heck of an experience.

Objetive Review

My objective review is that this phone is better than a blackberry since it has a faster internet and lot’s of options with the APPs. I speacially like the Digg app and twitterlator which is much more organized than twitterrific (the free one). I still have failed to pay for apps because I’m on savings mode so I’m thinking i could pwn my iphone to get qik on it.

Ok so I’m still in the feeling part of my purchase I guess i’ll wait until next week to review it objectively.

I’ve always wanted to make my own business and in fact I’ve tried many businesses before. From selling cookies and cakes at school to doing my own business consulting firm. Then i finally opened my eyes to my passion, the Internet and how it brings people together. I’ve got to know many great persons over this last months since my “return to the net”. I’ve never should have left the internet in the first place, because business i wanted to do was here bringing solutions to people.

I want to do a startup too and so far I have some ideas, but i will also like to contribute with other startups around the world. So this is my chance to give a tiny bit of help to a friend I’ve made around social media sites and that i hope i meet in person some day soon.  Calley Nye better known as SiliconCalley is trying to fund her startup with a great idea Start me Up. She want’s to raise 25,000 dollars to create the prototype of her site to pursue further fundings. Her start up is called DashBuzz and i can’t tell much about it only that it will solve the problem of having to administer many social media sites. This is a problem we’ve all had. The idea is simple:

  • We have a limited amount of time
  • We have plenty social media sites
  • We lose time updating all sites separately or,
  • We fail to update or be in some sites.
Having known those facts i think this startup has a lot of future and i hope to learn more of it really soon.
Calley wan’t the blogsphere and the twitterverse to fund the first part of this project. She is asking for a favor and she is planning on returning it. Remember Whuffie …if you build it up you can “cash” it later. For more details go here.
There is a donation button on her site and you can donate there or ask her more questions about it. Please Donate it’s a good cause and she says many people won’t fund a non-technical  first time start up fo. I say that’s wrong we can fund her startup. Finally I’m also a non-technical startup founder in the making. But the thing you need to notice is the desire burning in you when you do a new business and that fire that keeps you going every single day until you achieve your goals, just to set up new ones and keep going.
I want to help Calley and though I don’t have a paying Job right now I will look for ways of helping her because i believe that this project will actually help me and many others to manage social media in a more smart and efficient way.
So please Help Calley and help this new Social Media Start Up Funding. If we all put a little bit a huge difference can be made. And as a side effect we challenge the old funding model with a more social one.
Making businesses is the best thing to do, for me it’s just what makes me go everyday.

Yesterday I was participating in a study about Piracy and I was asked my thoughts on it.   So i had to think what i think about Piracy and Free Software. Here are some thoughts.

I think that the model of making software and charging a fee for it is actually not going to work for much longer. People are either using free tools or downloading the software from the p2p services and getting them. Comapnies have been trying to fight piracy a lot and until know they have failed bigly. For sure they’ve scared some people with lawsuits, but they aren’t stopping the main community. I don’t think sharing files is wrong, it’s just a new way of doing things. Companies can chose to go with change or to just stay with the old system. I believe since the old system is a comfort zone they will fight to stay there.

Some Examples and Business Model ideas

Gladly we can see examples like Google or Zoho that enable people to use productivity suites (like microsoft Office) for free and makes it really easy to collaborate and share on-line which adds a lot of value to the production of documents.  Google Docs is what i usually use for creating word documents or spreadsheets. It is easier to make papers on-line where all the students collaborating with me can help at the same time without being physically on the same place.

So as you can see by the example above there are some alternatives to piracy. Another one is ad-supported software that you can use freely and be subject to some sort of advertisments or sponsors. Finally, we have free software as an alternative to the “traditional” software business. Free software is simple, people create it and make the code (the actual programming) free  so people can work on it and make it better while they make sure the access to that software is free for all.

In conclusion, I think that companies need to find a new business model to try and embrace the new way of sharing. People will continue to share software and other types of files on-line  amd there should be many ways to benefit from that instead of defending a model that is becoming obsolete. Of course that piracy is not good, but companies need to understand that there are another ways of monetizing software than direct sales.

Since some people buy only what they like, extended trial periods could be a good alternative for people to try software and then pay some money for it. Another choice could be software rental (a fee for time of use). Or Ad supported programs (I mean small ads not spamming with ads like old p2p clients used to do). Or anything else.

It’s time to get creative. These are a few ideas, if you have more please share them on the comments.

This week I was watching EPIC FU on a thursday (thanks work + college +  lot’s of occupations) and i actually noticed that i was there. I made a comment on a discussion on MIX the Epic Fu community and i was featured there. That’s so cool. Here is the video. (My comment appears at 8:12 approximately.

Haven’t updated my Blog in a week or so. That’s the Bad Blogger Syndrome that gets in us from time to time. A few things have been going in my mind distracting me from BRKOPP, it looks that finally our projects are taking off and we should end up the break time.

As you may know BRKOPP is a operation that emerged from me and my partners deciding to take a break to think of ideas for a traditional business. By Traditional I actually mean some sort of boring business that we didn’t love. So we decided to do what we loved, which is tech industry, social media, relationships and making other people’s lifes easier. So we took this Break from that to think on projects we loved. Looks like finally we have a few ideas to start and we are trying to make them come out as fast as we can.

Break will never end in the sense it was concieved, because we will never go back to the traditional model we were trying to follow. But break time will be over because it’s time to start working in making our ideas real.

I’m working with my long time school friend and partner in business Samuel. I’m also gathering a team of people to work with that will love to embrace the web as new way of getting things done. The web is indeed the tool that has changed our lifes.

On the other hand, as much as I believe in my projects i want also to help in other people’s projects so I have applied to a job on a internet companie hoping to learn and give as much as i can and make it a huge experience.

But enough of my projects. You’ll see them soon. Probably in a couple of weeks.

Today I bought some amazing Cinammon Rolls from a friend that is making them! They were amazingly good! I think i’ve just discovered the new dessert for when i have lunch at work. Specially because i love em. So knowing that i love food way to much i have decided to take cooking lessons to see if i can become the closest i can to a cheff.  Have you ever wondered why we love sugar so much? and as we grow up we tend to like other kinds of foods than sweets. It’s very interesting! I need to ask about it to someone. So if you know please post.

Well its a  Wednesday night and I need to keep reading Rebooting America which is a nice book of essays you can download for free or buy if you like it! I’m doing both.

My Wish List

Today I made my Tech Wish List:

1. Mac Pro : Double 3.0 Xeon 32 GB of Ram(Just cause it’s a wishlist) and a Nvidia Quadro

2. MacBook Pro: 2.6 GHZ 15″  with 4GB

3. Dell Displays (3 24″, 2 for the MPro and one for the MBpro)

4. A Drobo Second Generation with 4 TB Hard Drives for my videos

5. A Server for my home (Probably Running Ubuntu Server)

6. A  Flip Mino

7. A Canon Vixia HF 11 (Or a Red One, the Red One gets the priority)

8. A set of lights

9. A mixer with lot’s of types of microphones. Including 3 clip microphones for the tapings.

10. Asus gaming laptop

11. A 16 GB iPhone

12. A  Canon Digital Photo Camera

13. PS3, Wii (so i can finally return the one i have at home), and a 52″ Display

14. Lot’s of Ikea furniture to put all my new tech.

So those are the 14 items i want. I will Include a Tesla Roadster, but that is other kind of Tech.

I will also add a Job at a Startup and a Startup itself so i can have the money to pay for electricity bills.

Ok so if my title brought you to read this it means I’m good at making titles. The point here is I haven’t studied any writing I just write and try to get better as I do it. That’s how my education process works in Social Media, Whuffie, Love, Video Editing, Web Design, Video Direction, Public Speaking and many more things i really love. So basically all my education or at least 75% of it occurs outside of actual schools or classes.

There is a person I really admire for all that she is doing and without what we will call a Formal Education(which is not education, mostly), but I’m sure she is  educated in Marketing and Tech as she loves this subjects (plus some coding). She is Calley Nye who just launched TechNewsLA. This is to show that no matter what type of education you get, if you love something you’ll be excellent at it. Period. And there are many more, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates for example.

Standarized Results

Standarized Results

A while ago i posted about the talk given by Sir Ken Robinson on the TED Conference about education producing people smart enough to do tests, but not prepeared to go out in real world and share their talents. Today, while I was catching up with all the blogs i usually read I came across a blog post by Tara Hunt (2 actually, and yes Tara Hunt again, she is making change in thought, at least in mine). Tara talked about incentives in the education system. So the system gives money to the schools that get good test results on the standarized tests, so teachers give incentives to kids with good grades on the standarized tests and finally we get standarized kids. All people learn test taking skills more than actual information or a theory of knowledge and a thought pattern to follow. I thank i did the IB program at high school because it thought me how to think in a different way than if i had taken the SAT’s. I have to thank the IB program and many people need to thank life or work to teach them this things or maybe their parents. No matter how we got to learn to think, maybe it was for a school’s good teacher, IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF THE INCENTIVES GIVEN BY THE GOVERNMENT.

Ok so this happens in all countries. Not only in the US, it happend here too. Sir Ken Robinson talks about how standarized tests kill our creativity and make us don’t develop our talent. We can agree in that everyone of us is a different person, hence we have different skills and talents and different ways of working them out. I think that since the educations system is failing to deliver a proper talent education we need to come up with an idea that will develop the talent people have inside.

In the first place there should be a culture of just do it. I mean if you think you are talented at something don’t listen to voices let you down and tell you your tests are the most important thing. Just dedicate time to what you love and you’ll be succesful. That is a must. Look at me I’m blogging probably not for much people to read. I’m happy if one person reads this, just one. But the fact is that I’m getting better, so this is part of my education. I do it this way because my business program doesn’t include a writing class. So i just teach myself how to write.

So as I write because i love it. People should just do the things they love. For a moment think in someone that loves Surfing. We happen to have a former world champion of surrf, Sofia Mulanovich, she dedicated to surf and stopped giving a focus to standarized education finally she got to be World Champ in 2004. The system is not working so i came up with an idea.

Why not give incentives to art and extra curricular activities development (Ok now that i think it it was Tara’s idea). But it was a good one and I support it. We need to let standarized tests as Plain Vanilla and then start putting the chocolate on. Let’s give money to schools that produce the most outstanding papers on literature, the most perfect blogs, the best teams at sports, the best art demonstrations, the best video productions, the best history essays, the best business projects via something like Junior Achievement.

Finally we need to create thinkers not test takers, Thinkers are the ones making this world great. Thank god there is people still teaching this, at home, school, alternate programs, work, life, the street, twitter or anywhere else.

Mainstream Apps

I was just watching lot’s of videos by many interesting people that rule new media and web 2.0. Specially Gary Vaynerchuk, Zadi Diaz, Jason Calacanis and Kevin Rose. They all agree on one point, the potential of the web is still enourmous, because not even 1% of the population are using the killer apps.

Ok maybe more than 1% of the poulation are using it, but the truth is that it’s a minority using Twitter, FriendFeed, and watching On-line shows. Many average people use You Tube to watch short videos, funny videos or just trailers, they use e-mail to communicate and some of them have blogs.  But, the truth is that many of the really useful and collabortive apps that are out there on the market are still not used in a “Myspace” style.

Myspace and Facebook are probably the most succesful social networks because they managed to get in the mainstream. Garay Vaynerchuk said: “Imagine when Oprah starts using twitter”. That shows the huge potential twitter and other sites have if they manage to get in to the majority of the population. I am pretty sure that Paris Hilton and Megan Fox will have close to 1 million followers if they were on twitter and with that many people will find other people and get the benefits of being part of the that community of users.

But all these cool apps aren’t mainstream yet and some seem to have trouble to get many users even inside the early adopters market. I think the main problem is that people still don’t see the benefits of using this sites. It’s crazy to say that because the benefits of these sites are in front of our faces. My personal experience is that I got a job via Twitter from a person I wouldn’t have known if i wasn’t using twitter at all. And at first it seemed normal but now I’m thrilled at the idea that I got a job using a site like Twitter. Twitter rocks, but i also got to learn lot’s of things and meet cool people that i can help and people that help me with my projects. Continue Reading »

Today I start my long weekend. After 3 weeks of working at an electricity distribution company tomorrow we have the anniversary party. That doesn’t count as work right? You may wonder how a Social Media person (like I like to label myself) is working for a Electricity Distribution Company. It’s simple it is an internship and here in Peru we don’t get many cool startups or firms to work. So this is the main reason why I’ll like to move to California pretty soon.

The fun thing is that i work at the PR department (though studying Business Administration) and i keep arguing with people on how to speak to costumers and how they are the ones needing all the information, while the people in charge of communications don’t communicate as they should. I guess they can afford the luxury of that since Electricity Distribution is a Natural Monopoly.

Going on with my plans on Sunday I’ll keep doing my work for this amazing project in the UK called 4mations. Special thanks to Mel Kirk for letting me be part of her team. LOVE YA! MEL! YOU ROCK!

Well so this long weekend will be highly productive and maybe I’ll go to a party or two. Also on Saturday we will be doing the Live DROPP TV and the taping of the new and improved Dropp Report (Quest of getting out of Beta). So this is a bit of randomness! Also I’m looking for another Internship in the operations department at any company that has one, specially if it’s a internet or social network. I need to get out of electricity and need more action.

The other great news is that my consulting firm is back in action JGD CONSULTING! and it’s becoming a Marketing, Projects and Social Communications Consulting firm. So this long weekend will be busy…And i thought i would get to sleep.

Please leave your comments, critics, ideas, love, hate or any schwag.

See you son probably uploading the new Dropp Report.
